Among our permanent barriers, the guardrail barrier is best known and found alongside many roads in the Midrand region, especially on bends, bridges, road elevations and other places where it would be more dangerous than normal for a vehicle to leave the road. The barrier’s short supports are designed to snap in a progressive fashion, allowing the barrier to deform and direct the errant vehicle safely back onto the roadway. ABC Terminal Ends are often fitted to the ends of these guardrail barriers. Outstanding energy absorption is achieved through deformation and friction, as the rail sections slide rearwards. This concept is a superior way to end off barrier rails; in the past, guardrail barriers would usually bend down into the ground with a pronounced ramp, encouraging a vehicle that hits it to become dangerously airborne.

Another example of a permanent barrier is the wire rope safety fence. This is an elastic barrier with a low risk of personal injury when struck in a motor vehicle. It is frequently used on highway medians where impacts may occur from either side. Repairs to the fence can be done easily and quickly, minimising the dangerous period during which road workers are next to the roadside.
