Preventing pedestrian accidents with Armco RSP’s road products

Seventeen pedestrians die on South African roads every day; 40% of all our road accident fatalities are pedestrian accidents.  This is a very high proportion, because comparatively few people in South Africa own cars and are pedestrians dependant on public transport.  Armco RSP’s road safety products aim to lower the accident rate in South Africa, including pedestrian accidents.  There are several things that motorists can watch out for to reduce the chances of being involved in an accident with a pedestrian.

Take care when turning right at a traffic light.  Facing a green traffic light, traffic turning right has to wait for a gap in the oncoming traffic.  However, at the same time you should keep an eye on pedestrians crossing the green light, and ending up in your path, just as you are trying to take the gap.  Public transport brings with it its own hazards.  Wherever people catch taxis, trains and buses, pedestrians may be less than vigilant, and run into traffic.  An especially hazardous situation is commuters disembarking from buses and taxis.  They may often just appear from behind the taxi or bus and start crossing the street.

Try to keep in mind that pedestrians become desensitised to passing traffic and drop their guard as time passes.  Never assume that a pedestrian had seen or heard you.  This is especially important when pedestrians are walking next to the road, more so when their backs are turned toward you.  Always obey pedestrian warning signage and stop when pedestrians want to cross the street at a pedestrian crossing.
