Roads

South Africa has the best roads in Africa.  Many of the roads in our large centres are being upgraded in anticipation of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup, although some roads in the countryside are in need of serious repair and Government has fallen behind on the project.  Armco RSP manufactures and supplies several road products used in road construction.

Roads need to be carefully planned, taking into account environmental considerations, and lengthy environmental impact studies are undertaken before a road building project is approved.  There are other considerations too, like erosion control, safety, storm water and noise pollution.  The landscape is prepared beforehand; depressions are filled up and earth is removed by blasting.  Roads are designed to follow the natural topography as closely as possible, without having to do too much filling up and cutting to maintain a relatively even keel, and to keep costs at bay.

Mountain passes must be carefully planned and are expensive to build due to difficult access, steep gradients and a lot of filling and cutting.  Road builders must take vegetation into account when they build a road in ecologically sensitive areas.  Water drainage is important, as are protected plants that may have to be relocated by law.  Lastly, cat’s eyes, guardrail barriers, signage and road markings are added.
