Road Workers Safety

Armco RSP manufactures and supplies the reflective delineators, brightly coloured temporary barriers and other road products that serve to channel and divert traffic at road works sites.  However, road workers’ safety is still at risk due to reckless driving by motorists.  There are also other common practices that have been proven to compromise road workers’ safety.

Speed limits are in force at road works to allow motorists to respond timeously to obstructions, to brake in time for tailbacks and to allow them to safely negotiate detours, uneven surfaces and sudden direction changes brought about by the road delineation and traffic diversion often found at road works sites.  The safety of road workers is also threatened by motorists speeding through road works sites, especially at night.  Another major problem that was identified is improper merging.  This might be caused by drivers who do not know how to merge, causing disruption and unnecessary sharp braking.  However, it is often caused by impatient drivers racing up the converging lane as far as possible before merging, putting other motorists and road workers at risk.  It has happened that motorists have ploughed through the delineators indicating the converging lane, killing or injuring road workers.

Incidents have also been caused by inattentive drivers who had failed to notice speed restrictions, road works signage, lane diversions and road workers.  Drivers are also often involved in accidents when they are distracted by passengers, car radios or cellular phones.
