South African road safety statistics make for chilling reading.  South Africans make more than 800 000 accidents annually and 15 000 people die on our roads every year.  Armco RSP strives to reduce these figures with the manufacture and supply of our road safety products.

Taxis make up more than 10% of these accidents and this very unsafe sector of the generally inadequate public transport system had been a headache for Government for a long time.  Taxi bosses bent on protecting their profits have also been critical of the proposed rapid transit systems mooted for South Africa.  Government is planning to take over the licensing of taxi operators and completely control and regulate taxi fares as part of the taxi recapitalisation effort.  This plan also aims to scrap 150 000 unsafe taxis.

Road safety has been incorporated in the curriculum of primary schools since 2006 as part of a joint effort by the Department of Education and the Department of Transport to curb the high number of road deaths among young people and children.  Substantial successes to lower the number of deaths on South African roads have been claimed by the Department of Transport, but these claims have met with criticism.  Many detractors point out that the fatalities have decreased no more than the number of people who take to the roads during these harsh economic times, which means that the per capita figure has not changed much.
