Road Construction

South African highway and road construction had started to expand rapidly during the 1980s and today we boast the best road network on the African continent.  The country is currently in a road construction expansion stage again, in preparation for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup.  Unfortunately, the work will only be “substantially finished” by 2010, according to the Department of Transport.  Armco RSP is involved with road construction with the road products that we manufacture and supply.

Major roads such as national roads and dual carriageway highways are designed to have as even a keel as possible.  These roads’ build requirements make them a lot more expensive to build, as more depressions have to be filled and more blasting conducted to cut through hills and ensure very gradual rises and falls.  They are also wider, often have multiple lanes and wider shoulders and emergency lanes.  Even before the road is built, it has to be planned to follow the natural topography as far as possible and there are countless considerations, like the acquisition of the land, the number of bridges required, the number of other roads crossed, noise pollution and environmental impact studies.

Armco RSP plays a leading role during road constructions, providing the water-filled, temporary plastic barriers, blade-type delineators and road signs warning of construction work and temporary speed limits.  Once the road has been completed, we install the guardrail barriers, permanent signage and other traffic products that calm, direct, regulate and channel traffic.
