Road Construction Safety

Road construction safety has become a buzz term in South Africa, what with the unprecedented number of road construction sites dotted about the country in preparation for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.  Even only in Gauteng, a few construction workers have died in accidents at road works sites, again drawing the attention to road construction safety.  Armco RSP strives to improve safety at road works sites with our innovative road products.

Driver impatience is a big problem; many accidents are caused this way.  South Africans tend to speed and are prone to road rage as well.  These factors combine to increase irritation levels at construction zones where bottlenecks occur, low speed limits are enforced and long lines ensue when motorists have to wait for blasting operations to finish.  Interestingly, one of the biggest sticking points is the typical converging of lanes.  These are usually indicated at least 400m in advance where speed limits are already 80km/h or lower.  Still, motorists race up the converging lane as far as possible before attempting to squeeze in at the front of the row.

Inattentiveness has also been sited as one of the stumbling blocks.  Motorists are distracted by all manner of things, like cellular phones, things happening at the roadside, passengers and car radios.  They do not notice speed limit and road works signage or stationary traffic at a tailback ahead.
