Infrastructure and road construction in South Africa are at a high point at the moment, despite the depressed economy. Many of these projects were started a few years ago, during the boom period. Although new projects have slowed dramatically, road infrastructure is being upgraded at an unprecedented rate in anticipation of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup. Some companies specialise in supplying construction products that are used at road works sites.

A well-known sight at road construction sites is the blade-type, floppy delineators. These are tough, flexible and impact-resistant. Sometimes rubber cones are used to serve a similar purpose and other types of “safe hit” channelisers.

Temporary barriers are used at road construction sites to guard workers and to divert and channel traffic. These portable, plastic barriers are easily installed and interconnected and then filled with water. Temporary steel barrier guards may also be used.

Many permanent construction products are barriers too. The most common type is the typical guardrail barrier, usually installed on mountainous roads and on bridges, to prevent vehicles from leaving the road. Wire rope safety fences are often used on medians where potential impact from both sides is anticipated.

Special, water-filled barriers are used at tollgates to protect tollbooth operators. Anticipated impacts at tollgates are often at a high speed, and barriers should make provision for heavy commercial vehicles as well. These barriers are multi-layered and may start with a water-filled barrier to absorb the bulk of the impact, as well as concrete and steel to stop a vehicle.

Other construction products may include portable plastic barriers of heavier gauge and with steel internal bracing for added impact resistance and various other types of delineators, stop blocks and speed ramps.
